OmniStar

OmniSTAR is the world's market leader in providing Differential GPS (DGPS) corrections via satellite. With worldwide coverage, 70 reference stations around the globe, and 3 network control centers, OmniSTAR provides a highly reliable positioning service. The OmniSTAR service was developed to satisfy the need for an accurate positioning system for land-based and airborne applications. OmniSTAR service offers unprecedented real-time, DGPS positioning, without the need for a base-station and radios.

OmniSTAR offers three levels of Differential GPS: OmniSTAR VBS, OmniSTAR XP and OmniSTAR HP.

OmniSTAR VBS is a sub-meter level of service. A typical 24-hour sample of VBS will show a 2-sigma (95%) of significantly less than 1 meter horizontal position error and the 3-sigma (99%) horizontal error will be close to 1 meter. In conjunction with the RT3050/RT4050 product this results in an accuracy of 50cm CEP. Much of our test data shows results more accurate than this.

The OmniSTAR HP service will usually have a 2-sigma (95%) horizontal error under 10 centimeters and a 99% horizontal error of less than 15 centimeters. It is particularly useful for surveying tasks. It operates in real time, and without the need for local base stations or telemetry links. OmniSTAR HP is suitable for applications that have open sky for long periods of time (30 minutes or more), such as aerial surveys.

The new OmniSTAR XP service is much cheaper than the HP correction service while it is only slightly less accurate. The OmniSTAR XP service is able to correct position to an accuracy of about 15cm in open-sky conditions after about an hour of continuous lock.

The RT3050/RT4050 (OmniSTAR VBS version) and RT3040/RT4040 (OmniSTAR VBS/XP/HP version) products combine the robust positioning solution of an Inertial Navigation System with the precision of a Differential GPS. Using an Inertial Navigation System makes the system immune to short breaks in the GPS. The position is still output, at the 100Hz/250Hz update rate, when the GPS is obstructed.
