RT-Range interface to ABD Robots

18 July 2009

The RT-Range integration to the Anthony Best Dynamics (ABD) robot allows highway manoeuvres such as cut-in, overtaking or near miss scenarios to be designed and run repeatedly with unprecedented accuracy. Together the systems provide an invaluable tool in the development, testing and benchmarking of advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) such as blind spot detection, forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control (ACC).

Using two driverless ABD robots is a good solution to some ADAS tests but when one of the vehicles needs to use adaptive cruise control then tests need to be triggered based on the position of this vehicle and not based on time. A solution based on the RT-Range, path-following and cruise control can be a lot less expensive than two full driverless robots, yet it can achieve almost as much as the full driverless solution.

The RT-Range passes data to the ABD robot in real time where it can be used to trigger steering robot or path following tests such as overtaking or cut-in manoeuvres. Ethernet is used for the communication between the RT-Range and the ABD robot so that the delay is much smaller than can be achieved using a CAN bus.

Data acquisition of many RT-Range measurements, such as Longitudinal Range, is done by the ABD robot. RT-Range measurements are time synchronised to the robot’s data and saved in files for analysis in the robot software directly after the test.

The combination of the RT-Range and ABD robots gives the ultimately repeatable ADAS test and development platform for vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers. For more information download this document or contact OxTS.
