Rail Survey

Rail surveys present some of the most challenging operating conditions for GNSS survey systems. Bridges, cuttings, tunnels, overhead equipment and urban interference all affect the accuracy and availability of GNSS measurements, which rely on receiving a good number of clean signals directly from the satellites. This lack of GNSS reception means there are numerous stretches of track where alternative survey techniques must be employed, which can be a time-consuming and costly process.

Our products solve these problems because they don’t rely on just one measurement technology. As well as using the measurements from two GNSS receivers they also use inertial measurements to calculate and maintain position estimates. In practical terms this means once the system is set up and working, it doesn’t matter if the sensor passes through a deep cutting or under a bridge where the GNSS signals are blocked, because it can maintain all its estimates based on the inertial measurements. It also means the system provides a constant picture of its orientation at up to 250 Hz, which can be used as a georeferencing datum for video and lidar systems.
