RT-Range represents Target vehicles as polygons

Product News March 22, 2011

220_PolygonTargetsThe OxTS RT-Range now represents Target vehicles as polygons. This is a big step forward compared to using a single point for a target and is another unique feature of the RT-Range. Engineers using the RT-Range for testing advanced driver assistance systems no longer need to make assumptions or perform complex calculations; as always, the RT-Range takes care of everything.

The RT-Range computes the closest range from the hunter or subject vehicle to a polygon representation of the target vehicle, automatically swapping points and even interpolating between polygon points. Up to 8 points can be used to represent the polygon and a new output on the RT-Range can be used to identify which polygon points have been used. For simplicity only 2D polygons are required, with the z-direction being ignored for the calculations. There is no need to represent the vehicle as a full 3D polygon with thousands of points.

Polygons are more representative of real-world vehicles compared to single points. For traditional tests where the hunter vehicle approaches the target vehicle a single point works well. More advanced tests, like blind spot detection, are easier to perform when a polygon is used. Collision detection at junctions, as demonstrated by Volvo, is also simplified using polygons.

Other advantages of using polygons include the ability to have hidden target vehicles. The RT-Range can compute whether a second target is visible and whether the radar should be able to identify it. This is needed to benchmark radar performance when acquiring new targets. The RT-Range even measures the percentage of the target that is obscured or hidden behind another target.

The obscured or hidden target feature is particularly useful when evaluating how radars track pedestrians as they emerge from behind larger targets like cars. The RT-Backpack option makes it simple to mix vehicles and pedestrians in the same environment.

The RT-Range is the most complete test tool for the development of ADAS sensors and algorithms, giving more vehicle-to-vehicle measurements and more lane positioning measurements than any other competitive system.
