Rail mapping

Rail mapping

Create safer, more efficient railways

Rail mapping has the potential to transform rail operation. With accurate mapping data, rail operators can build proactive maintenance solutions that spot issues with tunnels or overhanging branches, reroute trains around hazards, or manage depots more efficiently – all in real time. Building a rail mapping solution relies on localisation that can overcome a number of challenges:

  • Being able to provide accurate data even in areas like tunnels where GNSS signal is blocked.
  • Providing enough accuracy to differentiate between parallel tracks, even in challenging areas like stations.
  • Being commercially viable, both in terms of cost and export logistics, if you’re building a solution for a global market.

The OXTS solution for Rail mapping

An OXTS solution gives you the required accuracy and robustness of data, even in tunnels and stations. Whether you want to integrate your own sensors into a solution, or are looking for a complete localisation packagem we have something for you.

  • Smooth, high-quality PNT data from ITAR-free hardware
Our GNSS/INS devices use careful calibration, sophisticated sensor fusion and an advanced navigation engine to deliver highly reliable data in a variety of environments.
  • Georeferencing-specific capabilities
Unlock specific features in your GNSS/INS such as advanced gx/ix processing, external data logging, and compatibility with our specialist georeferencing software, and our unique LiDAR Boost capabiligties available with WayFinder.
  • Software to make your project easier
As well as our free NAVsuite applications for configuring and monitoring your GNSS/INS during build and test, we have georeferencing-specific tools including OXTS Georeferencer.

GNSS/INS features for Rail mapping

Rail mapping requires centimetre-level precision, even in environments where GNSS signal is limited like tunnels and stations. You also need the ability to georeference the data you collect as quickly and easily as possible. The following optional features are all included in our LiDAR mapping feature bundle:

  • Advanced gx/ix tight-coupling – Speeds up RTK reacquisition after transient but complete GNSS outage meaning more accurate navigation data for longer (see example below)
  • PTP and gPTP time synchronisation – Master and client functionality makes it easier to integrate your GNSS/INS into an existing system.
  • External file logging – log data to an external storage device for longer missions.
  • OxTS Georeferencer – use Georeferencer to quickly and easily georeference your point cloud data, and to calibrate your LiDAR and GNSS/INS coordinate frames to remove point cloud blurring and double vision.

Tools for your project

01

OXTS Georeferencer

Quickly and easily combine localisation data from your GNSS/INS with raw LiDAR data to create georeferenced point clouds, and precisely calibrate your LiDAR and GNSS/INS for crystal clear point cloud data.

02

LiDAR Boost

An advanced solution that uses data from any 32-laser, 360° LiDAR to compensate for missing or erroneous GNSS updates. Used in post-process, LiDAR Boost gives you better quality localisation data in GNSS-denied environments for georeferencing your survey data.

03

NAVsuite

  1. Configure your OxTS GNSS/INS.
  1. Monitor the navigation data from your GNSS/INS in real time.
