There’s so much you can do with localisation data. In recent years, the applications for position and orientation data has grown exponentially – particularly in the autonomous navigation space, but also for ground truthing activities including automotive testing, and georeferencing sensor data. One final frontier remains: getting accurate localisation data in areas where GNSS signal is either patchy or non-existent.
Today, OxTS is proud to announce the launch of a new product that will help our customers navigate past that frontier: WayFinder. Powered by our unique new technology, LiDAR Boost, WayFinder is a complete solution for infrastructure-less GNSS-denied localisation.
WayFinder: the all-in-one GNSS-denied navigation solution
WayFinder combines an OxTS GNSS/INS, an on-board processor, a LiDAR scanner, and two cameras to create a solution for GNSS-denied navigation that works out of the box. Simply mount it to your vehicle or platform, configure, initialise and go.
WayFinder is ideal for evaluating, integrating and deploying accurate localisation at speed. Its ease of setup and use mean that integration time and complexity are kept to an absolute minimum, getting projects moving quickly and keeping them on track. + LiDAR Boost: real-time LiDAR sensor fusion
WayFinder contains a brand-new software from OxTS called LiDAR Boost, which significantly improves the performance of OxTS GNSS/INS devices in challenging environments. LiDAR Boost is what makes WayFinder’s GNSS-denied localisation capabilities possible.
Simply put, LiDAR Boost is a set of advanced algorithms that use data from WayFinder’s integrated LiDAR to compensate for missing or erroneous GNSS updates in real time. It enables high-accuracy localisation in challenging GNSS conditions such as urban canyons, underground environments, or tunnels. Learn more about LiDAR Boost here.

Who benefits from WayFinder?
In every field that uses inertial navigation or that relies on localisation data, there are three broad challenges that need solving to create a truly versatile solution:
- Getting accurate localisation data in environments where GNSS signal is strong.
- Getting accurate localisation data in environments where there is weak, or no, GNSS signal.
- Seamlessly switching between methods of localisation so that you can transition between those two environments.
WayFinder can solve all three challenges, creating a system that provides accurate localisation in and across any environment. To translate that into real-world terms, a few applications where WayFinder adds value include:
- Providing localisation data for autonomous port vehicles even when they are navigating between stacks of containers that block GNSS signal.
- Providing localisation data for autonomous mining vehicles, both underground and above ground.
- Creating an indoor automotive testing solution that doesn’t use any infrastructure, making it lightweight and portable.
- Gathering accurate localisation data for surveys in environments where GNSS signal is patchy or non-existent.
In short: if you need localisation data for a land-based application that covers a range of environments including areas where GNSS signal is poor or non-existent, OxTS can help you. For more information download our datasheet or product brochure.

The WayFinder datasheet is your window into the specifications you can expect to achieve when using WayFinder in areas without GNSS. Not only that, but you can also review some example data collected during testing.
Oxford as you've never seen it!
During testing, we took WayFinder out on a tour of Oxford. An improvement in localisation data, leads to an improvement in point cloud accuracy as can be seen with the example point cloud screenshots above. See if you can spot the Ashmolean Museum and the Martyrs’ memorial!
